Recognizing the enormity of the challenges our society faces, FGLIMed is dedicated to making a lasting impact through our student-led initiatives and programs. While our efforts are driven by our organization’s singular focus, we spread a wide net by investing in a variety of progressive strategies. As a new organization, our efforts focus on uniting the FGLI community in medicine, gathering data and feedback, developing organizational sustainability, and recruiting leadership from different phases in medical training. Our efforts span three important themes:

Community

Form connections and build community among first generation college and low-income medical students.
Formation of an official FGLI in medicine network.
Promote dialogue and establish collective goals for the FGLIM network.

Empowerment

Promote well-being and collective visibility among current first-generation college and low-income medical students.
Provide and share strategies to build a FGLIM community at each medical school.

Advocacy

Challenge current paradigms in the medical profession, and promote belonging and appreciation of FGLI trainees in the profession.
Share and establish strategies to promote recruitment and retention of FGLI trainees in medicine.
Mentor FGLI high school and undergraduate students to help foster interest in careers in medicine and/or research and to further strengthen our FGLI community.
