CATHERINE HAVEMANN

Position: Secretary

Catie Havemann is a medical student at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in the Class of 2021, and aspires to a career in Emergency Medicine. She was born and raised in rural Northern California, and earned her Bachelor's degree at Mount Holyoke College. After college, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Neurology Department while studying for the MCAT and applying to medical school. Catie is passionate about serving, advocating for, and elevating first-generation & low-income students and trainees. Her professional interests include medical education, humanism & narrative medicine, and health equity. She lives in Nashville, TN with her wife, two cats, and a golden retriever. 

ANNEL M. FERNANDEZ

Position: Partnership Co-Director

Institute: Columbia, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons

Annel Fernandez is a medical student at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. She completed her undergraduate studies at Columbia University and worked as a Clinical Research Assistance at the Hospital For Special Surgery before matriculating into medical school. A Dominican-American, born and raised in the South Bronx, Annel is passionate about working with urban and underserved populations while addressing health disparities through evidence based community outreach programs. Annel believes her FGLI background has greatly impacted her relationships with peers, physicians, and most importantly patients. For these reasons, she is passionate and excited about working with FGLI students in medicine and FGLI-identifying physicians. Annel spends her free time teaching dance in her community to girls of all ages, serving in her local faith-community, and trying out different restaurants in NYC!

JAMIESON O'MARR

Position: Membership Co-Director

Institute: Yale School of Medicine

Jamieson O'Marr is currently at first-year medical student at Yale School of Medicine. Prior to medical school he attended Stanford University where he obtained a B.S. in Biology and a M.S. in Epidemiology and Clinical Research. As a FGLI student himself, Jamieson understands the many obstacles that can stand in the way of higher education for FGLI students and is passionate about helping other FLI students overcome these obstacles and pursue careers in science and medicine.

Institute: UCLA, David Geffen School of Medicine

Micaela Torres is a third-year medical student at the Charles R. Drew & UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine PRIME-LA. She was born and raised in the Central Valley of California and earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychobiology at UCLA. She previously served as a director for the First Generation student group at DGSOM and as a UCLA LMSA Mentorship Chair.  Her experiences growing up in an underserved community shaped her desire to work with low income underserved communities and advocate for health equity.

MYTIEN NGUYEN

Mytien Nguyen is a MD/PhD student at Yale School of Medicine. She identifies as Afro-Vietnamese and FGLI. Mytien obtained her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Cornell University studying microbiology and bioengineering. She is an alumni of the Traveler’s Fellowship at Weill Cornell. Mytien previously served as Yale Med’s Medical Student Council President, and is a co-founder of the Yale FGLI affinity organization and the Black Health Scholars Network (@BlackHealthSN). She is passionate about advocating for racial and socioeconomic inclusion in STEM and medicine. Growing up as a low-income biracial refugee, Mytien plans to utilize her platform to uplift the voices of the oppressed and advocate for the needs of minoritized populations.

STANA NICKOLICH

Position: Co-Vice President
Institute: Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University

Stana Nickolich is a second-year medical student at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Florida. Prior to starting medical school, she worked as a Research Assistant at Harvard University. Stana is the daughter of Cuban and Dutch immigrants and the first member of her family to attend college. She is passionate about advocating for and building a community of FGLI students. In her spare time, Stana enjoys spending time outdoors with friends and family.

ALEXIS RIVERA

Position: Co-Secretary
Institute: SUNY Downstate College of Medicine

Alexis is a medical student at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. She is of Puerto Rican descent and was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. She completed her undergraduate studies at Cornell University. Passionate about education and mentorship, she looks forward to building community with and for other FGLIMed students.

ROSELANDE MARCELLON

Position: Vice President

Institute: Albany Medical College

Roselande Marcellon, MPH, MA, is a medical student at Albany Medical College in New York. She is from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the daughter of immigrants. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Miami and graduate studies at Boston University School of Public Health and School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, worked in non-profit for Partners HealthCare. In her free time, she enjoys mentoring and sharing her love for science and the humanities with the students of Girls Inc. Paging Dr. Liz and the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). Roselande understands that admission does not equal access and she is committed to addressing the socioeconomic imbalance that exists in medical schools through her work as a member of the student advisory board for the First Generation and Low Income in Medicine Symposium and National Association.

CHEYENNE WILLIAMS

Position: Partnership Co-Director
Institute: University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine

Cheyenne is a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She grew up in Sterling, VA and received a BS in Biology from the College of William and Mary. Since pursuing a career in medicine, she has participated in diversity and inclusion efforts including co-leading Penn LIFT US UP (Low Income and First Time Undergraduate Students at the University of Pennsylvania), the first recognized FGLI affinity group at Penn Med.  She has also enjoyed opportunities to engage with amazing first-generation students throughout Philadelphia public schools as a high-school tutor and health educator.  Professionally, she is pursuing a career in Urology and hopes to utilize her Certificates in Medical Education and Academic Surgery to address the needs of underrepresented learners throughout their medical careers.

JOANNA CHEN

Position: Co-Treasurer

Institute: Yale School of Medicine

My name is Joanna and I am a first-year MD-PhD student at Yale. I was born and raised in Shanghai, China, and I came to the United States at the age of nineteen to attend Vanderbilt University, where I majored in Biomedical Engineering. I am particularly interested in the intersection of cultural and socioeconomic barriers in medical education and training. In my spare time, I enjoy learning different languages and traditional Chinese art forms, such as Beijing Opera and crosstalk.

MURSAL GARDEZI

Position: Co-Treasurer

Institute: Yale School of Medicine

Mursal Gardezi is a first-year MD student at Yale School of Medicine and a graduate of Brown University with a B.S. in Biology/Immunobiology. Mursal is interested in helping FGLI students foster strong mentorship relationships in all spaces. In her free time she enjoys baking, gardening and slow jogging.

Ruben Vega Perez is a rising third year medical student and joined FGLIMed inspired by his experiences in education and his community. He hopes to contribute to FGLIMed's growth and expand the association's partnerships.

Hailey Roumimper joined FGLIMed with the vision and drive to help shape the direction of FGLIMed. She is currently a second year medical student at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

REMA ELMOSTAFA

Rema Elmostafa, is a third year medical student at Mercer University School of Medicine. She was instrumental in shaping the early formation of FGLIMed Student Board.
